This masterclass is provided by Prof. John Drury, internationally renowned as an expert in the field of Crowd Psychology. The masterclass is relevant for anyone responsible for the safety of crowded places, public events and public manifestations, may it be involved in crowd management, the design of event locations or the development of strategies aimed at influencing crowd behaviour at events, stadiums and other entertainment areas. John Drury has previously delivered this masterclass in various countries. The content of the teaching material will be completely updated for ESI, to match the latest insights and developments.
In the masterclass, you will gain insight in the latest scientific techniques and research results in the field of crowd psychology. You will also get to know different core concepts and principles, which can be applied in practice across different domains. In addition, you will receive a series of practical recommendations and guidelines, that will help you apply crowd psychology theories in practice. After having taken this masterclass, you will have new insights that will help you increase the safety and resilience of your crowd at events and other crowded places.

- Description: masterclass in which the latest scientific theories and applications of crowd psychology are presented. The course equips participants with core concepts and principles that can be applied in practice across a variety of domains.

- Introduction to crowd psychology in relation to crowd safety
- How people behave in emergency situations: from vulnerability to collective resilience
- Using crowd psychology in communication
- ‘Personal space’ in static and moving crowds
Day 2
- Crowds and conflicts
- Working with group identities and norms to enable collective self-regulation
- Managing crowd behaviour in a case study: the effective decontamination of mass casualties in a chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear incident (CBRNe).

John Drury is a Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Sussex. He has 30 years of experience investigating crowd behaviour – including mass gatherings, live events and festivals, mass emergencies and crowd conflicts. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles on these and other topics. He teaches crowd psychology for crowd safety management at the UK Fire and Rescue Service and to crowd safety managers around the world.
Syan Schaap has a Masters in Public Administration. He has specialized in safety at events and crowded places as a consultant for the past 20 years. He founded the Event Safety Institute in 2014 because he felt the need for an independent center of expertise in event safety and crowd management. Within ESI, Syan leads complex projects, is a sparring partner for governments and teaches in various courses. Syan is like no other able to combine the scientific approach with the diversity of day to day practice.
