The course Introduction to Crowd Science is developed by Professor G. Keith Still. The course is now provided in Australia and New Zealand by the teachers of the Event Safety Institute under a unique license from Professor Still. The course is offered together with the paperback ”Introduction to Crowd Science” as well as access to his online portal with the level 5 course as an eLearning.
Specialist course for event professionals and governments
If you are responsible for the safety in public areas, you must be able to apply principles and insights to the field of Crowd Science. This statement by Professor Keith Still is hard to deny. Crowd Safety is central to event planning and the considerations to be made when choosing, designing and assessing the safety of an event location. Anyone involved in a private role or a public responsibility must be able to understand which risks play a role and how to deal with the specific safety risks surrounding crowds. The Event Safety Institute offers this internationally accredited course for professionals on a Higher Vocational Education level exclusively for Australia and New Zealand. The course is provided by Roderick van Gelder.
Purpose of the course
Developing more awareness about the behaviour of crowds and individuals in the crowd, and their reactions to certain developments. The course also gives insight into how public behaviour can be modelled and how certain techniques that contribute to public safety can be applied.
After completing the course, the participant can:
- Recognise dangerous situations for planning and assessing events (Crowd risk analysis);
- Understand mass behaviour in the complex and built environment, under normal circumstances and in emergencies;
- Model an event in phases (inflow, circulation, outflow) and recognise factors of influence (design, information and management);
- Perform risk analyses for planning, designing and managing areas where crowds gather and move;
- apply guidelines for managing audience movements for various types of locations;
- articulate which factors determine the risks and safety of crowds.
It is also possible to organise the course in-company. This is eminently possible three days in a row, for groups of up to 20 participants. During the course, we apply the available knowledge about Crowd Safety and Risk Analysis to your case studies and events. This includes: how and when your visitor numbers reach a critical limit, and how the effects of design, information and management influence the behaviour of your visitors. These are vital parts of understanding public safety at your own event. We help your team individually or collectively to understand crowds, make the necessary security plans, and to interpret and deal with protests. By taking the course at your own location, your team can learn together and apply the knowledge in their own practice.
Certificate and accreditation Highfield
The course is accredited by the IIRSM and Highfield Qualifications on Level 5 (Higher Vocational Education level). By completing the course with two written final assignments, you are entitled to the Certificate of Achievement. If you choose not to do this, you will receive the Certificate of Attendance.
Target audience: anyone involved in crowd management of public events and public manifestations, the design of the event locations and determining measures that influence public movements at events, stadiums and other entertainment areas. (employees and advisers of event agencies, producers, security organisations, police, security regions, municipalities, architectural firms, amusement parks, concert halls and stadiums)
Description: Higher Vocational Education-level training to become a crowd safety specialist with knowledge of Crowd risks, designing locations, dynamics in crowds and emergency planning. The participant learns to work with different models for risk analysis and management, including the DIM-ICE model and the RAMP analysis.
Required prior knowledge: Higher Vocational Education level in work and thinking. Preferably you have experience with crowd management issues in your work

Roderick van Gelder is a passionate professional and his strongest asset is his absolute determination to the entertainment industry. He is of Dutch origin, where he started in 1976 as a stagehand in theatres. He works and lives in Australia since 1990. From 2005 Roderick focussed on providing risk management and workplace health and safety advice for the entertainment industry. He wrote the Australian Entertainment Safety Resource Guide which was launched in December 2017. Roderick is an accredited TAE 40110 trainer.
